Cougar Buck Store Items Needed

Happy Holidays!
The end of the nine weeks will be here in a few weeks. Our students have earned Cougar Bucks for good behavior and good work habits. They are eager to spend their Cougar Bucks at the Cougar Buck Store at the end of the nine weeks.
Here is how you can help right now: when you are out shopping at the after Christmas sales and end of year clearance sales, please pick up items for students to purchase at our Cougar Buck Store. The Five Below Store has items that were very popular with our third graders the last time we had the Store. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Pre EOG Scores

Your child is receiving his/her Pre EOG reading score today in the reading folder. This is the state test all third grade students took at the beginning of this year. Please look at this data with your child.
The state expects each child to make growth. One of the best ways to do that is to read, read, read. Check out books from the public library or our school library that are on your child's reading level or one reading level higher. The goal is for students to be able to not only sound out the words, but to comprehend the meaning of the text.

Math Project due Friday

I gave this same set of instructions to your child on Monday on a green half sheet of paper.
Here are the instructions for the project:
You are the cashier at a store you own. You decide what type of merchandise you sell at your store and give your store a name. Draw a picture of items that would be for sale. Make a chart that lists the items and their prices. Five customers bring their merchandise to your cash register. Tell what each customer bought and the price of every item. Add their total cost. They pay with a bill that is larger than their total. Subtract to make change. Tell exactly how many bills and coins you give the customer to make change.

Example:                      Grover’s Grocery Store

Merchandise
Price
Bread
$2.50
Lettuce
$2.19
Banana
$1.38
Apple
$1.10

Customer One:

     $2.50 bread              $5.00 bill

+   $1.38 banana          - $3.88  total

$3.88  total               $1.12      Customer One receives 1 dollar, 1 dime, and 2 pennies in change.

Volunteers Needed for Oct. 10

Volunteers are needed for Service Project Store during Math Classes
The third grade students are doing a service project for Operation Christmas Child. During Math Classes on Thursday of next week (October 10th) students will be using their money/math skills as they pretend to sell and buy real items that will eventually be put into shoeboxes and shipped across the world to help children at Christmas.  I already have the items for our store, but if you want to contribute at least 70 of the same item, I will take donations until Wednesday of next week.
Here is where you can help: I need volunteers to help the cashiers and the customers count and record the transactions. Please reply via email to ckiser@neusecharterschool.org if you can help and please let me know what time(s). Thank you.

NEW SCHOOL YEAR

Dear Parents,

I am looking forward to a great start to a new school year. I cannot wait to meet all my students. This year I will teach math to all the students in third grade no matter what homeroom they are assigned.

The transition from second grade to third grade is a big step toward independence. There will be a parent orientation meeting within the first few days of school to address expectations, schedule, discipline system, and questions. I am looking forward to meeting the parents at that meeting.

The third grade teachers have posted a supply list on the school website. There should also be a copy at Walmart and Office Max. I promise that we use everything on the list during third grade. I believe students work smarter when they are organized, so our supply list includes all they need in order to be organized and color coded.

Happy Summer!
Mr. Kiser
