Welcome to Fifth Grade!
My name is Mr. Chris Kiser and I am very excited to be teaching Fifth Grade Social Studies and Science this year. My classroom has 25 Chromebooks as tools for impacting student learning. Each student will need a set of headphones/earbuds for my classroom. Students may use the same set of headphones/earbuds for technology class.
The plan is to alternate teaching 2 weeks of Social Studies with 2 weeks of Science. In Social Studies students will learn about early America. Students will be required to learn all 50 states and capitals. They will need help from parents to learn all these facts. Social Studies is not only about dates and facts, it is also about understanding human interactions. The Social Studies class will have discussions, debates, writings, and projects in conjunction with classwork, homework, quizzes, and tests.
The Science class is a lot of fun as students experiment in labs, do projects, and use the computers as learning aides. There will be a Science End of Grade (EOG) test at the end of fifth grade and learning correct terminology is the key to success on the EOG. There will be vocabulary quizzes throughout the course. Parents are encouraged to help students learn the vocabulary for the quizzes and tests.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year. Please subscribe to this blog by using the feature on the right sidebar of this blog page. If you have any questions, just send me an email or call me at the school, or set up a time to conference face to face. Communication is the key to a successful Fifth Grade year.
Blessings,
Chris Kiser

Blue Moon on July 31st
There will be a blue moon on Friday, July 31st.
A blue moon is not really the color blue. A blue moon happens when there are two full moons in the same month. This doesn't happen very often at all. The moon is waxing right now. By Friday it will be full. We have already had a full moon in July, so this will be the second full moon ~ called a Blue Moon.
I hope everyone is enjoying summer. I will see you soon in fifth grade soon.

Summer Time 2015
It has been a wonderful 2014 - 2015 school year in third grade at Neuse Charter School!
It is recommended that students work on Moby Max and IXL throughout the summer. Those accounts are available to all students on their existing accounts. Fourth grade teachers expect you to really know the multiplication tables from 1x1 to 10x10 and for you to read every day this summer.
If you are looking for a good workbook to review third grade concepts and start fourth grade learning, you may want to purchase:

Valentine's Day and Awards
The morning of Friday, February 13th is a very special time. We will decorate a special bag to put Valentines cards during homeroom. We will exchange cards starting at about 8:20, so don't be late for school. I am not planning a Valentine's snack, but if a few parents want to send in something for the class to snack on, I am open to that (as long as it is not messy). I strongly encourage your child to give a card to everyone or no one. We are doing our best to not exclude anyone. I sent a list of names in my homeroom in the Take Home Folder this week. I hope you found it in that huge stack of papers. :)
The Awards Assembly begins at 9:00 for 3rd grade. If your child received a yellow note in the report card envelope, your child is being recognized at the assembly.
There is no school on February 16th. Please make arrangements for child care. We are observing Presidents' Day.
